I usually check BirdsEye on my IPod at home before going on a day trip, so that I have some idea what to look for.

There is also an application for the Palm platform: the universal field guide on Eduneer.com - a work in progress. The birding Multimedia is quite extensive containing both photos and bird songs and calls. I should admit to some proprietory interest as several of my photos are included in the database.Hilke Brederhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18357741278362930033noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27055376.post-8555238210259603492010-01-17T14:24:00.063-05:002010-01-17T14:24:00.063-05:00Interesting developments in electronic birding.
I ...Interesting developments in electronic birding.
I must still be in the 'dark ages'; no 'apps', no iPod, just eyes, ears and a notebook then refer to a favoured reference book when I get home!!FABhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16185823702988992159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27055376.post-29976910582251118172010-01-17T02:07:52.108-05:002010-01-17T02:07:52.108-05:00I have iBird Plus and BirdsEye on my Ipod. I'...I have iBird Plus and BirdsEye on my Ipod. I've had Ibird for quite awhile and just recently got BirdsEye, so haven't fiddled with it much. I find myself relying on Ibird more and more.

I have spent the last couple of days at Bosque del Apache. This evening I was fiddling with Birdseye and checking out birds recently seen at the Bosque and saw a bird that I wasn't familiar with had been seen in the last couple of days. I flipped over to Ibird and realized it was a most likely the bird that I had seen but never was able to get a good look at! Lesson learned: check Birdseye before going somewhere, especially if it is out of your home territory. Birdseye, is in my estimation limited in usage to those using it on Ipod as it relys on internet access.

Even better, while at the Bosque on Friday a Roadrunner was going about his business and I watched/photographed him for about 20 minutes. During that time he/she ruffed his feathers up and exposed his back. I was baffled by the behavior. Ibird tells me that "to warm up without spending a lot of energy, roadrunners erect their feathers to expose the underlying black skin to the sun's rays."

I have three field guides out in the car, and I'm not going to go out and verify it at this point, but I would be willing to bet at least a plug nickel that none of them tell me about that behavior.

You can put me in the column of loving Ibird and I suspect that as I use Birdseye more, I'll at least be in a recommend/highly recommend column.kayleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09257818979372183859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27055376.post-40194308859395626502010-01-16T22:49:33.192-05:002010-01-16T22:49:33.192-05:00Hi Chris,
