This Week at Heinz NRW
Plenty of signs at Heinz NRW that Spring is finally well entrenched. Waterfowl - except for the nesters - have moved on. Plenty of song activity from the residents or early arrivals, plus returning passerines present. A few images ...
Yellow-rumped Warblers were not singing during mid-day, but were finally sporting their breeding finery ...
The nesting Bald Eagles have hatched. This adult took off from the nest and flew overhead en route to the marsh and estuary for foraging ...
This Carolina Wren was in a song duel with another nearby male ...
Mallards were on the nest. Most other ducks were gone, except for a few pairs of Green-winged Teal and a pair of Blue-winged Teal ...
Along the edge of the impoundment, a muskrat was foraging, while in many locations, turtles were enjoying the returning warmth of the Spring sun ...

Waterfowl at Heinz
A few days ago we did the circuit stroll at Heinz NWR in Philadelphia (the first urban wildlife refuge).
The eagles were on or near their nest, and soon will be incubating.
In the impoundment, plenty of waterfowl. A skim of ice on the water did not effect the birds as they landed, although they were clearly cautious as they landed. In preparation for the breeding season, the drakes were in their best attire. A few samples from the day.

November birding - sunny, 70s, beautiful
November - sunny, 70s, beautiful. Seems like an oxymoron, but that was yesterday. I made a late morning trip to Heinz NWR. Songbirds were quiet and resting. Most waterfowl were sleeping or preening. Only the Greater Yellowlegs were noisy and busy (next post will be GRYE).
But a very pleasant day for a walk. A sampling of the morning.
Ducks in the impoundment were all dabblers. The numbers were modest, but a few were fairly close to the pond edges.
Autumn Meadowhawks were flying all along the trails. They are so small that often they seem like a figment of the imagination, especially the females whose orange-brown color camouflages them among the brown and yellow leaves. The occasional male perched for me, and a pair flew locked in the copulatory circle.
Only a few butterflies were still about. This Eastern Comma was a particular treat.
Most sparrows were deep in the thickets, while robins were moving about, but rarely pausing for more than a few moments.
But a very pleasant day for a walk. A sampling of the morning.

Late November at Heinz
Winter is beginning to settle onto Heinz NWR. A skim of ice covered the impoundment, providing roosting for gulls, but there were enough open patches to provide forage for at least two dozen herons. Waterfowl moved to protected pools and the tidal Darby Creek. A few images from the brisk day ...
Heinz NWR continues to be the most dependable place in my birding circuit to tick off Rusty Blackbird on my year list (in November and March)

Brigantine Today
After two months in Philadelphia, we finally got a good day for driving to, and birding, some of the prime nearby place. We made an early morning drive to Forsyth NWR, Brigantine unit. Good birding, and a few decent photographic opportunities.
Highlight undoubtedly was the number of Osprey setting up housekeeping for another summer. I never remember to begin an actual count until I am well along, so I have to estimate that we saw at least 15-20 Osprey ...
Tree Swallows return early, but Barn Swallows were also present today, and Purple Martins were staking claim to nesting sites ...
The large wintering flocks of waterfowl have, for the most part, gone north, but there were still good numbers present. A sampling ...
Among the returning songbirds, I was most delighted by the Black-and-White Warbler, a forerunner of the warblers that make our eastern states the envy of the world ...
And finally, closer to our Philadelphia home in the last week, highlights include Rusty Blackbird at Heinz NRW ...
... and up to 25 Wood Ducks along the Wissahickon Creek.
